The FCC has adopted a Notice of Inquiry (NOI) to explore commercial technologies that would complement the Global Positioning System (GPS). The NOI examines how the Commission might foster GPS complements and alternatives. The NOI seeks comment on a wide range of position, navigation, and timing (PNT) technologies that are under development by broadcasters, wireless operators, satellite constellations, and startups that use FCC-licensed spectrum. Furthermore, the NOI seeks comment on the tradeoffs among emerging PNT offerings based on various factors, including scale, performance, geographic coverage, costs, and durability.
