The Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC or Commission) Office of Engineering and Technology (OET), in a Public Notice, has announced the creation of two innovation zones located in New York City and Salt Lake City. Being born out of the Commission’s 2013 rulemaking, that established new program licenses, these innovation zones will serve as city-scale test beds for testing new advanced technologies and prototype networks, including 5G technologies. Specifically, these test beds will extend the geographic areas in which experimental program licensees can conduct tests under a single authorization.
The New York City and Salt Lake City innovation zones will last for a five-year term unless renewed at the end of the term. Interested parties must first register on the OET’s Experiments System webpage under the respective Innovation Zone webpage, https://www.fcc.gov/els, prior to operation.
