The FCC has announced the launch of its new app that allows users to test the speed of their mobile service. The “Mobile Speed Test” app builds on the original FCC Speed Test app with a redesigned interface and new user features. New features include a streamlined “Repeated Tests” function that allows for quicker testing, an in-app map overlay that displays the test area, and the ability for users to log into National Broadband Map to view their test results in context.
The Mobile Speed Test app is part of the FCC’s Broadband Data Collection program, which aims to provide the public with free, transparent information about their mobile service performance. Users of the app may submit their test data to the FCC as a challenge to provider-reported coverage, or as crowdsource data to help develop a more accurate understanding of mobile coverage. The app is available in standard app stores.
