FCC Adopts NPRM to Improve EAS and WEA Security

The FCC has adopted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking proposing rules to bolster security of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs).  Among multiple proposals, the FCC seeks comment on: (1) requiring EAS participants to report incidents of unauthorized access within 72 hours; (2) requiring EAS participants and wireless providers delivering WEAs to annually certify that they have a cybersecurity risk management plan in place; and (3) requiring wireless providers to transmit sufficient authentication information to ensure validity of alerts on consumer devices.

Comments will be due 30 days after publication in the Federal Register, which has yet to occur, and reply comments will be due 60 days after publication in the Federal Register.
