The FCC has adopted an order shortening the amount of time afforded to certain small voice service providers for implementing caller ID authentication using the STIR/SHAKEN framework. Last year, the FCC required voice service providers to implement STIR/SHAKEN by June 30, 2021, but provided an extension for small voice service providers until June 30, 2023. In the wake of new evidence that some small voice service providers were originating a high and increasing share of illegal robocalls relative to their subscriber base, the FCC will now require non-facilities-based small voice service providers to implement STIR/SHAKEN by June 30, 2022.
