NTIA has published a draft BEAD alternative broadband technology guidance to provide states and territories with additional guidance regarding the use of alternative technologies to serve unserved and underserved locations. For the purposes of this guidance, NTIA defines “alternative technology” as broadband access technology that does not qualify as reliable broadband service, including unlicensed fixed wireless and low-earth orbit satellite broadband service, but otherwise meets the BEAD Program’s technical requirements. Comments on this draft guidance are due by September 10, 2024.
