The FCC has adopted a Report and Order permitting a new type of wireless microphone system, a Wireless Multichannel Audio System, to operate in the broadcast television bands and other Part 74 low-power auxiliary station frequency bands on a licensed basis. The revisions to the rules also allow WMAS operations on an unlicensed basis in the TV bands and 600 MHz duplex gap. With these rule revisions, the FCC hopes to increase wireless microphone spectral efficiency and enable more robust spectrum use.
