The FCC has fined AirTel, LLC and IOU Acquisitions, Inc. $327,290 and $207,290 respectively, for providing unlicensed wireless broadband-based GPS services while claiming to provide radar-based location services. Air-Tel and IOU hold authorizations to provide Radiolocation Services in the 3300-3650 MHz band, but the two companies instead offered wireless broadband-based GPS services, which rely on satellite communications and wireless broadband, not radiolocation. Air-Tel and IOU altered wireless equipment settings to support this unauthorized service and to operate outside the authorized frequency bands allowed for the equipment.
