The Federal Communications Commission (FCC or Commission) has voted to adopt a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that explores new and innovative commercial uses in the 71-76 GHz, 81-86 GHz, 92-94 GHz, and 94.1-95 GHz bands (collectively the 70/80/90 GHz bands). The spectrum in these bands is primarily concentrated along a few high-traffic routes but mostly underused. The NPRM seeks comment on proposals for expanding use of these bands, specifically for innovative services by commercial users, while protecting incumbents. It also seeks comment on amending existing rules to allow for the delivery of broadband Internet access aboard aircraft in flight and ships at sea. This action represents another step in the Commission’s Facilitate America’s Superiority in 5G Technology (5G FAST Plan).
