The Policy and Licensing Division of the Federal Communications Commission’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau has granted a waiver of the FCC’s wireless enhanced 911 (E911) location accuracy standards to multiple wireless licensees. The waiver applicants were small rural wireless carriers serving areas where public safety answering points (PSAPs) were either not capable or receiving and using Phase II E911 location data or have not requested that such carriers provide Phase II E911 service. Each waiver will terminate six months after a petitioner receives a request for Phase II location data from a PSAP and is conditioned on the petitioner notifying the FCC within 30 days of receipt of a valid request for Phase II location information from a PSAP. The FCC denied a request for blanket waiver filed by NTCA – The Rural Broadband Association.
