In January 2016, the Federal Communications Commission adopted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that proposes revisions intended to strengthen the nation’s public alert and warning systems – the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) – by facilitating state and local involvement, supporting greater testing and awareness of the system, leveraging technological advances, and enhancing EAS security. A summary of the NPRM has been published in the Federal Register, setting the following comment deadlines: comments are due on or before May 9, 2016, and reply comments are due June 7, 2016.
