The FCC’s Wireline Competition Bureau has released a report on the status of Internet access services as of June 30, 2013. The report summarizes information about U.S. Internet access connections over 200 kilobits per second (kbps) in at least one direction, collected from FCC Form 477 submissions by telephone companies, cable system operators, terrestrial wireless service providers, satellite service providers, and other facilities-based Internet access providers. As expected, the report shows that the number of overall Internet connections in the U.S. is continuing to grow—connections increased by 13% year-over-year to 276 million—and both fixed and mobile services are shifting to higher speeds. The report also shows that growth in mobile Internet subscriptions was particularly high—the number of mobile subscriptions with speeds over 200 kbps grew to more than 181 million, which is an increase of 18% from June 2012.
