President Trump has signed into law the Secure 5G and Beyond Act of 2020 (S.893), which requires the executive branch to develop a national strategy to address potential security issues with 5G and future generations of wireless networks. In conjunction with the bill’s enactment, the White House released the required strategy outlining its vision to develop, deploy, and manage a secure and reliable 5G communications infrastructure. This interagency coordination effort, led by the National Economic Council (NEC), will be focused on four key issues: (1) facilitating domestic 5G rollout; (2) assessing risks and identifying core security principles for 5G infrastructure; (3) managing risks to economic and national security from use of 5G infrastructure; and (4) promoting responsible global development and deployment of 5G infrastructure.
