The FCC’s Wireline Competition Bureau has denied multiple petitions seeking either a 14-day or 30-day waiver of the Commission’s small voice service provider STIR/SHAKEN implementation requirement. The Commission’s rules require non-facilities-based small voice service providers to have fully implemented the STIR/SHAKEN authentication framework in the IP portions of their voice networks by June 30, 2022. The Petitioners argued that compliance could not be achieved due to technical difficulties arising in implementation, namely, upgrading both the hardware and software. In denying their petitions, the Bureau concluded that the two years they have had to complete the necessary work is sufficient and that they have not provided good cause to warrant an additional extension of this deadline.
