The FCC’s Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) has authorized the first LTE for unlicensed (LTE-U) devices in the 5 GHz band. As with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the FCC requires LTE-U devices to prevent interference as well as accept any harmful interference they receive. The OET approvals come after some industry opposition had raised concerns regarding interference and congestion in the 5 GHz band. Verizon and T-Mobile are among the first wireless providers to use LTE-U technology to deliver higher speed LTE to markets around the country.
