The Commission has adopted a Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking proposing to update the FCC’s existing rules regarding Next Generation 911 networks. Specifically, the FCC seeks comment on its proposals to: (1) update the definition of “covered service provider” in the FCC’s existing 911 reliability rules to specify how the rules apply to service providers that control or operate NG911 networks; (2) update the reasonable reliability standards for providers of critical NG911 functions; (3) establish NG911 interoperability requirements for the interstate transfer of 911 traffic between Emergency Services IP Network providers to optimize PSAP call transfer capabilities; and (4) modify the certification and oversight mechanisms in its 911 reliability rules, among other proposals.
Comments are due 45 days from Federal Register publication, which has not yet occurred, and reply comments are due 75 days from Federal Register publication.
