The FCC has adopted a Report and Order requiring originating service providers to implement NG911 capabilities on their networks and deliver 911 calls to NG911 systems. The Commission noted that state and local authorities have begun to invest significantly in NG911, replacing the legacy 911 technology with IP-based infrastructure, and some OSPs have delayed connecting to the IP networks. The Commission hopes that these rules will expedite the nationwide transition to NG911 leading to faster call delivery and improved service reliability.
