The FCC yesterday approved its 20th Annual Mobile Wireless Competition Report. For the first time since 2009, the Commission made “an affirmative finding that the metrics assessed in the Report indicate that there is effective competition in the marketplace for mobile wireless competition.” The FCC is required by law to release an annual mobile wireless competition report, and this year’s report presents a variety of data from 2016 and early 2017 and contains analysis of those data based on various accepted metrics of competition. Specifically, the Commission has determined that “consumer demand and output continue to increase, average prices have been falling, and service providers have enhanced the performance, coverage, and capacity of their networks.”
