The FCC on its own motion will make up to $76.9 million of high-cost Universal Service Fund (USF) support in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) available for the restoration of communications networks following the devastation of Hurricane Maria. As of October 1, almost 90% of cell sites are down in Puerto Rico reportedly and almost 70% are down in USVI. According to the FCC’s order, it will allow eligible telecommunications carriers (ETCs) in those areas to seek advance payment of up to seven months of high-cost USF support to assist with immediate needs and anticipated repair costs in restoring their communications networks. Specific amounts for each affected ETC are spelled out in the order.
