Recent hurricanes, earthquakes, and wildfires have demonstrated how susceptible America’s communications infrastructure is to disturbance during natural disasters. The FCC has thus launched a rulemaking proceeding to improve the reliability of communications networks during such disasters. The Commission is seeking comment on: (1) potential improvements that can be made to the Wireless Network Resiliency Cooperative Framework, which supports disaster recovery efforts in the wireless industry; (2) ways to improve information provided through the Network Outage Reporting System and Disaster Information Reporting System, which supply situational information during network outages; and (3) ways to reduce power-related disruptions to communications services.
