The Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC or Commission) Wireless Telecommunications Bureau (WTB) and Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) (collectively, WTB/OET) has issued a Public Notice announcing the approval of 3.5 GHz band environmental sensing capability (ESC) sensor deployment and coverage plans for CommScope, Federated Wireless, Inc. (Federated), and Google LLC (Google). These entities are the first to gain such approval from WTB/OET.
Based on WTB’s/OET’s approval, CommScope, Federated, and Google are now authorized to operate their ESC sensors consistent with the sensor location, configuration, and dynamic protection area (DPA) coverage data submitted to the Commission and listed in the Public Notice. However, before providing commercial service for any given DPA, each ESC operator must ensure it is operating in conjunction with at least one Commission-approved Spectrum Access System (SAS) and file a notification in GN Docket No. 15-319 providing the name of the SAS with which the ESC is communicating.
WTB/OET noted that they will continue to review and approve ESC registrations on a rolling basis as described in the ESC Sensor Registration Public Notice.
