The Federal Communications Commission (FCC or Commission) has adopted a Report and Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that implements a schedule to collect its congressionally required regulatory fees for fiscal year (FY) 2020. In order to collect the required $339 million in regulatory fees for this year, the Commission must collect payors’ fees by September 30, 2020. The Commission is required to collect regulatory fees each year that are reasonably equal to the amount of its appropriation from Congress. Regulatory fees recover salaries, overhead costs, rent, utilities, and other related costs incurred by the FCC. The Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking seeks comment on proposals to differentiate regulatory fees for different types of nongeostationary orbit (NGSO) satellites for FY 2021.
