The Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security has published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that would prohibit the sale or import of connected vehicles integrating components with a sufficient nexus to China or Russia in order to protect U.S. national security and the safety of drivers. The proposed rules specifically focus on the software and hardware that is integrated into a vehicle connectivity system and the software integrated into the automated driving system. Vehicles not used on public roads, such as agricultural or mining vehicles, would be excluded from this rule. Comments on the NPRM will be due 30 days after the NPRM is published in the Federal Register, which has not yet occurred.
