Congressman Ted Lieu (D-CA) has introduced The Protecting Consumer Information Act of 2018 (H.R. 5166). H.R. 5166 will expand the Federal Trade Commission’s enforcement authority over credit reporting agencies. Lieu has also introduced the Ending Forced Arbitration for Victims of Data Breaches Act (H.R. 5165), which would prohibit entities from enacting arbitration clauses for suits related to a data breach. According to Lieu, “these bills will ensure that the Federal Government has the tools necessary to compel companies to protect consumer financial data and enables victims of data breaches to seek recourse.” These bills have been referred to the House committees of jurisdiction for consideration.
