The US Department of Commerce and the First Responder Network Authority have announced that AT&T was selected to build the FirstNet network, the nationwide wireless broadband network dedicated to first responders. Under the 25-year non-public contract, FirstNet will provide AT&T with 20 megahertz of 700 MHz D Block spectrum and $6.5 billion over the next five years to build out the network. AT&T has indicated that it will spend about $40 billion during the life of the contract. AT&T will also connect users of FirstNet to its network assets. AT&T was selected over Rivada Mercury LLC consortium and the Code3 Broadband consortium.
