FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel has announced a proposal to create a voluntary cybersecurity labeling program that would provide consumers with more clear information about the security of their internet-enabled devices. Qualifying products would bear a proposed U.S. Cyber Trust Mark alongside a QR code that consumers can scan for more information. The certification mark approval for this Cyber Trust Mark is pending with the U.S. Patent Trademark Office.
The labeling program seeks to raise awareness of cybersecurity for IoT devices by helping consumers find products that maintain their privacy and security. The draft NPRM outlines the labeling program and requests input on issues such as the scope of devices for sale in the U.S. that should be eligible for inclusion in the labeling program, who should oversee and manage the program, how to safeguard the cybersecurity label against unauthorized use, and more. The Chairwoman estimates that if this cybersecurity labeling program is adopted it could be up and running by late 2024.
